So is it better to have lube & oil-change "technicians" standing around the shop waiting for customers who may or may not show up? It's not a union job they're doing. They are hired to work for their employer. If their employer needs them to stand on a street corner with a sign in order to generate enough income to cover the employees' paychecks, I believe that is making good use of the employees' time- and falls well within the duties of an employee.
paychecks are earned- and they are written on the manufacture & sales of products and services. It is in the employees' best interest to drum up business. Any employee who would refuse (or whine about) attempts to increase sales (especially during the slow wicked months in a strained economy) deserves termination based on their unwillingness to contribute to the success of the company for which they work.
If any of my employees think they deserve a paycheck without contributing to that paycheck, they would soon be corrected in their way of thinking- or looking for employment elsewhere.
