Die Palme No. 1 by Meyer & Brother, Chicago, Ill. c 1889 was the first in a series of songbooks intended for church choirs which is how "fur Kirchen Choir" on the front cover translates. Although an 1889 copyright does not necessarily translate into a publishing date of that year, there are clues to the age of this book. On the front cover as well as on the back cover there is a price given of $1.00. The back cover also prints prices for Die Palme No. 2 and No. 3 with No. 3 indicating $1.15. A later printing of the No. 3 would be listed higher. Personal family history was of Mennonite and it has been past down to me that books were brought over from S. Dakota at the turn of the century and used in the Salem Mennonite Church in Ruff, WA was using some of these books in the early 1900's.
This offering contains 104 pages printed in German script while the publishing information to front and back covers, plus inside are in English. The cover is still bound well although it does show the wear of many years of usage. Some smudges, minor tears, even a faint smell of storage in cedar trunk.
The No. 1 is a rare offering to come for sale. This seller also has the No. 3 offering for sale elsewhere listed on Craigslist for $30 if interested. And if interested in both (and if still available) a discount would be offered for the pair. Thanks for looking and reading!
