We have laid out a grid of 8 pens in our pasture. Every week the pigs get moved to a new pen. Each pen is on average 3,800 square feet, giving each pig about 8 times more space than an average pig typically gets! One pen is used for a week and then rests for 7 weeks, which keeps it from getting over-grazed. Our pasture was initially planted with a variety of forage crops such as turnips, clover, winter rye, and sunflowers, which the pigs benefited from as they rooted them all up and ate them. In turn, they benefited the soil by fertilizing it as they rotated through the pens, the grass getting greener and more lush all the time. Plus, rotating the pigs through the pasture keeps parasites from completing their life-cycle and reproducing, so our pigs are naturally worm-free! When a little extra help is needed, we turn to medicinal herbs, rather than the harsh chemicals most pigs are routinely treated with.
What else do our pigs eat? While their diet consists mostly of forage grass and garden scraps, we also feed them non-GMO grain from Wood’s Hay and Grain which is also corn free and mostly soy-free. For optimal nutrition, we soak the grain for 3 days to let it ferment, providing the animals with a good supply of probiotics for good gut health.
While raising our pigs this way requires a lot more work and has higher costs, we believe the quality of the pork that results is so worth it! Many people who have tried our pork say it is the best they have ever tasted--and we certainly agree! Our goal is to make available the most nutritious and best tasting meat we know how to raise!
