Midges are a great and plentiful food source for fish. Every fisherman should have a few in varied colors and small hook sizes when the hatch is on. Have you noticed though when there is a full blown hatch with billions or even trillions of Midges in the air and on the water how do you get your one fly to be noticed by a fish ? Is the fly your using a better replica than the actual bug ? Please try this the next time you find yourself in that situation. Don’t worry about the size of the bug you select just match the color exactly and use a size that will break the surface tension of the water. The fish will be in a feeding frenzy and won’t care about the size of the fly. They will key on the color and the larger impact of the water surface giving your fly the best opportunity to be selected for a meal. I have tried this trick in British Columbia , Yellowstone , Montana and Washington waters with great success. Now if it’s a small hatch and just a few bugs are hitting the water then by all means match the color and small Midge size’s and you will still be rewarded. I don’t tie to many size 22 , 20 , and 18 sizes anymore because they don’t sit or fasten well in my old vice. But a lot of fly shops like tying those small sizes and are good at it so please add some to your fly box in case you need them. I do have the midges in size 14 and larger as shown in the pictures for 50 cents and 75 cents. The location is a couple of blocks from Indian Trail Elementary School in N.W. Spokane.
